CS + Kreme

Second self-titled EP from CS + Kreme. It’s hard to pin down the special allure of this project from Conrad Standish and F ingers’ Sam Karmel. It's hard enough to describe what it is...Balearic pop that’s been left out in the sun too long? Synth and drum machine-driven exotica given a brooding, Isolationist twist...

‘Sisters’ is certainly their most lugubrious offering to date: Standish sounding like a bad-trip Robert Forster (maybe this is what became of The Clarke Sisters) but it wouldn’t do to overstate the darkness: this is music that is blissy first and foremost and always. Nonetheless, even at their most spaced-out and digressive, CS+K are committed minimalists: every surface sanded down, all excess fat trimmed. The magic, for us, is on side two: their new version of ‘Roast Ghost’ is a deft and deeply rewarding marriage of late 90s sophisto-soul/trip-hop and New Age drift, while the mesmerising, smoke-choked jazz-dub arabesque ‘Portal’ will knock you off your deckchair. Magnificent.
