Back in stock...Fire's definitive 2LP compilation of godlike genius Richard Davies' star-crossed nearlymen, essentially combining the albums Untune The Sky and Instinct. Hands down one of the greatest bands ever to come out of the Aussie underground, the brittle jangle-punk of their early songs quickly escalated into epic, could've-been-bigger-than-the-beatles visions of baroque pop. Formed in Sydney in the late '80s, the original grouping seemed poised for the big-time, but split in '94 after a long stint in New York failed to precipitate any kind of commercial breakthrough. Frontman and songwriter Davies stuck around in the US, and that same year cut Instinct - a masterpiece of grown-up, minimal/compact 90s psychedelia - with a crack team of musicians including The Clean's Hamish Kilgour.
What songs... 'Nailing Jesus To The Cross', 'This Is A Happy Garden', 'The Crasher', 'Lonely Hearts Get What They Deserve', 'Bury Me Happy', 'What's The New Mary Jane', 'Cassie Peek'...for many of you these will already be well-worn articles of faith... if on the other hand you've never dabbled, you life is about to improve IMMEASURABLY. Yeah...STIRRING stuff, just brilliant, the best.
