Eagerly anticipated for months...more archival material from Glasgow's greatest "lost" post-punk/DIY band, on Stroom (who brought us that brilliant Cybe), with a bonus CD of 2014-16 piano works by the band's Hugh Small.
A duo comprising Small (music) and Anna Howson (vocals), Vazz were active throughout the '80s. 100 copies of their demo cassette Whisper Not were run off; a proper release was lined up on Les Disques Du Crépuscules' Operation Twilight sublabel, but never materialised. They went on to release a few singles and a mini-album on Cathexis, but it wasn't until Forced Nostalgia reissued Whisper Not on vinyl in 2012 (as one half of a split with La Bambola Del Dr Caligari) and the exhaustive 2013 CD compilation Chronoillogical that Small and Howson finally got (something approaching) their dues.
Submerged Vessels & Other Stories is comprised of previously unreleased Vazz recordings from the '80s together with more recent instrumentals. If you've encountered either of those Forced Nostalgia sets, you won't need much encouragement to pick up this one: dreamy, dubbed-out post-punk with a heightened sense of space and atmosphere. Howson voice has the sort of lost-girl folk/jazz sonority that we adore in Alison Statton and Mary Currie, the perfect foil for Small's deep resonant basslines, scratchy guitar and criss drum programs. It's hugely recommended for fans of not only YMG and Flaming Tunes but also Raincoats, Isabel Antena, Marine Girls. Which is surely everyone?
