Strung-out, droning, dandyish minimal techno/pop, an ultra-beguiling mix of the lush and the lonesome, the ultra-alienated and the uplifting, from SUED lynchpin SVN and Takashi Wada under their TASE guise…. Can’t overstate how much we’ve been loving this album… imagine a creepier (!) Closer Musik, or the dopesick, Tuxedomoon-worshipping blooz of Brinkmann’s When Horses Die refracted through the blunted, tape-smudged aesthetic of Acido’s My House Is Not Your House comp, or Jac Berrocal if he’d been weaned on Profan 12”s as well as Chet Baker LPs…Like all the best stuff to come out of the Neues Deutschland studio, even at its most warm and engaging and sumptuously trippy, it holds something back, leaves you in no doubt that it exists first and foremost to please itself. But that doesn't stop it getting under your skin...and make no mistake, the closer you listen the WEIRDER it is, built with a career-insomniac’s ear for fucked psychoacoustic detail, and heavily, uncompromisingly dubwise…spaced-out, bassline-centered, everything in a constant state of slippage and partial-dissolve...exuding old-Europe decadence and ornament but somehow also punchy, poised, and concise, with a relentless forward momentum and trackiness…an U-Bahn goin thru’ the hole in the back of yr head!
Perfect, perfect record...plz wake me up if anything even half this good turns up in the next 11 months.
