Zark time! Re-press of DEADLY and rare early noughts 12” from Mat Carter, the perfect intersection of minimal, electro and broken UK techno, somehow both low-slung and ultra-compressed. I LIVED for this sort of stuff in the early-mid 2000s, but confess the first time I’d even heard of Mat was when Mark (that Mark) played ‘7 Zark 7’ at a shop party a couple of years ago and I rushed him for an ID in the most rabid and undignified fashion. Hard to put it into words, but this whole EP is just the god-given QUINTESSENCE of underground dance music for me: ultra-alienated, funked-up, pared-down, future-proof; cerebal and zoning-friendly but dancefloor-napalming first and foremost; not hidebound by fashion or sub-genre or what delusional journalists think people like. Yeah...I just came up on a pill I took in 2002. (sorry the old lines are the best).
